It was a long time ago I’d heard the reference to Eumalga, an Aboriginal Princess, after whom Jean Emile’s vineyard and property were named, and his last born daughter who is buried in St Peter’s Church graveyard in Petersham, Sydney.
From time I’ve searched “Eumalga” never finding anything that explains where the notion comes from that there was a woman who went by this name, and last night… voila!
An 80 page story, second edition, and published by the Wellington “Times” – her story in full.
She died not quite a decade ahead of Jean’s arrival, but her reputation would most likely have still been something to talk about in his lifetime.
This is the cover…
And then this gem surfaced in the National Library archives. She looks smart as a tac and the White Chief a well-to-do convict… great match.
Makes you wonder, considering she died near the river at the base of Mount Arthur will she rise again and be remembered.
It’s fascinating Jean Emile would honour her by naming his property and a daughter in her name.
He just gets more interesting by the minute.
